X (Twitter) Video Quality Explained

In short
You can only download the resolutions the uploader provided. Choose the highest for editing and a medium one for sharing.
When you download an X video you usually see several choices of resolution. Here's what they mean and how to pick the right one.
You can only get what was uploaded
X stores each video in several sizes, based on the file the author uploaded. If the original was 720p, there is no 1080p version to download. No tool can add detail that isn't in the file. If the video is blurry, the source was probably low quality or X compressed it heavily.
Reading the resolution list
Resolution is written as width x height in pixels, for example 1280x720. The bigger the numbers, the sharper the picture. Many videos on X are vertical, so the numbers can look swapped (for example 720x1280).
- Large (such as 1920x1080 or more): sharpest, best for editing or a big screen.
- Medium (about 1280x720): a good balance for phones and sharing.
- Small (around 640x360 or lower): smallest file, fine for quick previews or slow connections.
Why file sizes differ
File size depends on resolution, the length of the video and bitrate, which is how much data is used per second. A higher bitrate keeps more detail. Two videos with the same resolution can have different file sizes for this reason.
Which one should you download?
- Keeping or editing the video: choose the highest resolution.
- Sending it on WhatsApp or similar: medium is enough, and uploads faster.
- Saving storage on your phone: choose the smallest that still looks acceptable.
Why a downloaded video can look worse than expected
- The uploader posted a screen recording or a low-quality file.
- The video has been re-shared many times, and each upload was compressed again.
- Your player is scaling it up to a larger screen.
