Can't Download a Twitter (X) Video? 8 Fixes That Work

Oct 12, 2026 · 4 min read

In short

Most failed downloads come from a wrong link, a post with no video, a private or deleted post, or an in-app browser that blocks downloads. Check them in this order.

You pasted the link, pressed Download and got an error or nothing at all. In almost every case the cause is one of the eight things below, and each has a quick fix.

1. The link is not a post link

The downloader needs the link of one specific post, which looks like x.com/username/status/1234567890. A link to a profile, a list, a search or the X home page has no video to read. On the post, tap Share > Copy link. If you aren't sure how, see how to copy an X post link.

2. The post has no video

Posts with only pictures, text or a link card (for example a preview of a YouTube video) have no video file hosted on X. Open the post and check that the video plays inside X itself. Only videos and GIFs hosted on X can be downloaded.

3. The account is private or protected

Only public posts can be read by a download tool. If the author protected their account, the video is hidden from everyone who is not an approved follower, so the download fails. Read more in can you download videos from private accounts?.

4. The post was deleted or restricted

If the author deleted the post, or X limited it (for example sensitive-content or region restrictions), the link no longer returns a video. Open the link while logged out in a private browser window. If you can't see the video there, the tool can't either.

5. The video is in a quoted or replied post

When someone quotes a post, the video belongs to the original post. Open the quoted post and copy its own link, then try again.

6. You opened the page inside the X app

The browser built into the X app, and similar in-app browsers, often block file downloads. Open the downloader in Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android) instead. See the guides for iPhone and Android.

7. The video plays instead of downloading

Some browsers open the MP4 in a new tab. Long-press (mobile) or right-click (desktop) the Download button and choose to save or download the linked file. Or play the video and use the three-dot menu in the player to download it.

8. Temporary problems

  • X changes how it serves media from time to time, which can break downloaders for a short while. Wait a few minutes and retry.
  • Turn off a VPN or ad blocker if the page doesn't load the list of qualities.
  • Check your connection and free storage. A download can stop if the device runs out of space.

Still stuck?

Try the Twitter to MP4 downloader with a different video to see whether the problem is the video or your device. If one video keeps failing, email the post link to support from the help page.
